Shopify's August 26 Deadline Has Passed. Your Conversion Tags May Be Gone.

Shopify removed the Additional Scripts field from all non-Plus stores on August 26. Any Google Ads tag, Meta Pixel, or GTM container that lived there stopped firing two days ago — silently, with no error, while your campaigns kept spending.

Shopify's August 26 Deadline Has Passed. Your Conversion Tags May Be Gone.

Two days ago, Shopify completed its migration of all non-Plus stores to Checkout Extensibility. Any code in the Additional Scripts field on the Thank You and Order Status pages — every pixel, tag, and GTM container you'd pasted there — was removed. Not migrated. Removed.

Your store kept taking orders. Your platforms kept spending. The only thing that stopped was the tracking.

What the Additional Scripts field was

For most non-Plus Shopify stores, the Additional Scripts field was the central tracking hub. A text field where you'd paste your Google Ads conversion tag, the Meta Pixel base code, your GTM container snippet, TikTok's pixel, Pinterest's tag — anything you needed to fire when a customer hit the thank you page. It worked because Shopify would inject whatever was in that field into the order confirmation page on every completed transaction.

That field no longer exists on non-Plus plans as of August 26. Shopify auto-upgraded all remaining stores to the new thank you and order status page architecture, and anything in Additional Scripts didn't carry over.

Shopify Plus stores went through the exact same migration on August 28, 2025. For everyone else, today is the equivalent of that moment.

How to tell if your tracking is down

You're looking for a signal mismatch: orders still completing in Shopify admin, but conversion events dropping in your ad platforms.

In Meta Events Manager, check your pixel's purchase event volume for August 27 and 28 and compare it against August 24 and 25. A sharp drop in purchase events while your Shopify order count stayed flat confirms your Meta Pixel was living in Additional Scripts.

In Google Ads, look at your conversion action data for the last 48 hours. Zero or near-zero purchase conversions on campaigns that were converting normally before August 26 is a clear indicator. Cross-reference against GA4 — if GA4 still shows purchase events but Google Ads doesn't, the issue is that your Google Ads conversion tag was in Additional Scripts while GA4 installs via a different mechanism and survived.

This distinction matters before you do anything: the diagnosis here is tracking failure, not performance decline. They look identical in reporting and lead to opposite responses.

What broke and what didn't

Everything installed through official Shopify app channels was automatically migrated. The Meta for Shopify app, the Google & YouTube channel app, and TikTok's official Shopify app all use the Web Pixels API internally. If you installed your pixels through these official apps, Shopify moved them to the new architecture automatically. You're likely unaffected.

What died: any pixel you installed by copy-pasting base code directly into Additional Scripts. Any GTM container added through Additional Scripts — which means every tag inside that container is now dark, including GA4 (if loaded through GTM), Pinterest, Bing Ads, and affiliate networks. Any post-purchase survey or loyalty script injected through that field.

The rule of thumb: if it was in the Additional Scripts text box, it stopped on August 26. If it was installed through a Shopify app, it survived.

The fix

Shopify's replacement architecture is the Web Pixels API, accessible through Settings in your store under Customer Events. Official platform apps — Meta for Shopify, Google & YouTube, TikTok for Shopify — run through this system automatically. If you haven't installed them yet, installing them now restores browser-side pixel tracking for those platforms.

For platforms without an official Shopify app, you need either a third-party pixel manager built on the Web Pixels API, or server-side tracking. Server-side is the more durable choice regardless of your situation: it sends conversion signals directly from your server to the ad platform, with no dependency on the checkout page loading correctly. Meta's Conversions API, Google's offline conversion imports via the Data Manager API, and TikTok's Events API all work this way.

Do not try to re-inject tracking through workarounds that mimic Additional Scripts behavior. The field is permanently gone on non-Plus plans. The correct path forward is Web Pixels API or server-side.

Damage control for your campaigns

Smart Bidding algorithms learn from consistent conversion signals. Two days of missing data won't permanently derail a campaign, but the longer the gap, the more bid targets drift. If you're running Target CPA or Target ROAS on Google, your algorithms are currently making decisions with incomplete information — they may pull back on bids if they read the signal gap as a genuine performance decline.

For Meta Advantage+ Shopping campaigns, the impact can show up faster. These campaigns depend heavily on pixel data to guide creative rotation and audience selection. A sudden drop in purchase signals may shift spend toward different creatives or audiences in ways that don't reflect actual customer behavior.

Restore the tracking first. Then give the algorithms a few days to restabilize before making any bid or budget changes. Chasing a ROAS dip caused by missing data will compound the problem.

The diagnostic step that matters most right now

If your August 27 performance looks worse than August 26, the first question isn't "what changed in the market?" It's "is my tracking intact?" These two things require completely different responses, and confusing them is expensive.

A free account audit through Gromerce will surface attribution gaps, broken conversion setup, and signal-quality issues in about three minutes — and right now, that diagnosis is more useful than any bid adjustment you could make.

The tracking is the problem to solve. The performance question comes after.
