Pinterest Is Putting Ads Inside Visual Search Results

Pinterest's visual search has been running ad-free since it launched in 2015. That changed at Pinterest Presents on September 17.

The company announced Visual Search Ads: a new format that places sponsored results directly inside visual search queries and Pin closeup views. It is the first time Pinterest has monetized its camera and image search tools. The number that explains why this matters: 80 billion monthly searches on the platform, with more than half carrying commercial intent, and none of that traffic previously available to paid advertisers.

What the format does

When a user runs a visual search — uploading or photographing an image to find similar items — or taps a Pin to open its closeup view, Visual Search Ads appear at the top of those results. Advertisers bid for placement in those spots and the ad links directly to their site.

Pinterest has not published minimum budget requirements or CPM benchmarks for the beta. Setup runs through existing infrastructure: Pinterest Ads Manager, connected to a product catalog or landing page, the same as any Pinterest Shopping campaign. The ads appear alongside organic Pins rather than replacing them.

There is no dedicated form for requesting beta access. Pinterest says it will roll out to eligible advertisers in Pinterest ad markets over the coming weeks. Region, account spend history, and catalog completeness have historically been Pinterest's eligibility criteria for new products, though the company hasn't confirmed this for Visual Search Ads specifically.

Why the search volume changes the math

The 80 billion monthly searches figure, confirmed in the Pinterest Presents event materials, reframes what Pinterest actually is. It is not primarily a mood board platform; it is an intent layer. People search on Pinterest to find specific things, not to be surprised by them.

Commercial intent at more than half of 80 billion queries works out to roughly 40 billion monthly searches from people actively looking for things to buy or make. That's the addressable audience this format opens up.

Visual search adds a dimension that keyword ads cannot reach. A user who photographs a lamp in a hotel lobby and searches for similar products is expressing intent with precision that no keyword combination captures. The visual query tells you exactly what they want, before they know how to describe it in words. Advertisers who can place a relevant product at the top of those results are catching a buyer at the moment of precise intent, not sometime later when they've worked out the vocabulary.

Who should act now

Products that translate well into images have the clearest path to value here: fashion, home goods, beauty, food, and anything where the visual appeal of the product is what drives the purchase decision.

If you already run Pinterest Shopping campaigns, your catalog is set up and you have the shortest path to the beta. Watch for the eligibility notification in Ads Manager or contact your Pinterest rep if you have one. If you don't have a Pinterest Ads account and sell in these visually driven categories, opening one before the beta exits is a reasonable move.

For advertisers where product photography isn't the primary conversion driver — software, financial services, professional services — there is no urgency.

The timing argument

New Pinterest ad formats have historically come with lower competition during beta periods. Fewer advertisers bidding means lower CPMs and a real window to build performance data before pricing normalizes.

Pinterest reported $1.18 billion in Q2 2026 revenue, up 18% year over year, per its investor filings, and 640 million monthly active users. The platform has been expanding its ad infrastructure steadily. Visual Search Ads is a logical extension of that investment, and the sheer size of the search volume suggests it can become a real channel for product discovery advertisers, not a niche placement.

The beta window is limited. Getting in early, before most advertisers notice the format exists, is the move if your products fit.
