What actually happened
OpenAI announced Sponsored Agents yesterday, and if you read past the press release language it is a meaningful change in how ChatGPT advertising works.
Here's the mechanism: a relevant ad appears in a ChatGPT conversation. The user sees it. They can tap to enter a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent — a separate thread, visually distinct from ChatGPT's own answers. That conversation is the ad. There's no mandatory click-through, no landing page load. The purchase path either completes inside the conversation or the user clicks out when they're ready.
Two integrations launched at the same time. US-based Shopify merchants can install a ChatGPT Ads app directly from the Shopify App Store and create and manage campaigns without leaving their admin. HubSpot users can connect their ChatGPT Ads account inside HubSpot, run ads, track performance, and route leads into existing workflows. Both are live as of September 16, 2026.
OpenAI also added AI-powered text customization that adjusts your existing headlines and descriptions to fit the conversational context of a given ChatGPT session, plus automatic translation into the user's preferred language.
The handoff problem this actually solves
If you've tested ChatGPT ads with standard formats, you've probably noticed the conversion path is awkward. Intent in ChatGPT is high — the platform has consistently pitched commercial-intent users as a meaningful share of its active base. But the jump from ad click to external landing page breaks the flow. The user was in a conversational interface; suddenly they're on a product page built for keyword-intent traffic from Google.
Sponsored Agents don't fix intent. They fix the handoff. The conversation continues in the environment the user was already in, under the brand's voice rather than a landing page that was never designed for this context.
Whether this translates to better conversion rates at scale depends on one thing: whether your brand can actually run a sales conversation. Not just whether your landing page converts.
What the Shopify integration changes in practice
The Shopify app is the bigger deal for most DTC brands reading this.
Until now, running ChatGPT ads meant managing a separate Ads Manager interface. For brands already managing Shopify, Meta, and Google from different dashboards, ChatGPT was another tab and another login. The Shopify app brings campaign creation and performance monitoring into the same interface where you're already managing orders, inventory, and your other ad channels.
The product feed auto-generates ad creative from your Shopify catalog. The same principle that applies to Meta's catalog ads and Google's Merchant Center feed applies here: catalog quality is creative quality. Incomplete product descriptions, missing attributes, generic titles — these become your agent's conversational material. Your catalog health is now part of your ChatGPT strategy in a way it wasn't when the channel was just static ad units.
What to actually do with your account
If you haven't run ChatGPT ads yet, the Shopify app removes most of the setup friction. You can connect, pull your product catalog, and have campaigns running in one session.
If you're already running ChatGPT ads with CPC or CPA objectives, Sponsored Agents are an additional format, not a replacement for what you have. Keep your existing campaigns running and test the Sponsored Agent format separately with a defined budget and conversion goal.
The thing most accounts won't do quickly enough is write a conversation brief. A Sponsored Agent conversation needs a defined scope: what questions should the agent answer, what should it not discuss, what's the desired outcome, and when should it push toward a site visit versus completing in-chat. Without that brief, the agent defaults to generic responses scrapped from your site. That's better than nothing, but it's well below what a deliberate brief produces.
The HubSpot integration matters if you're selling anything with a follow-up component. High-consideration purchases, subscriptions, lead gen — conversations that don't close in the first exchange need to route somewhere. HubSpot as the default routing destination means your ChatGPT leads can enter the same nurture sequences as your email and form leads without extra setup.
What this doesn't fix
The learning phase problem is unchanged. ChatGPT ad campaigns still need conversion volume to optimize. The cold-start dynamics that applied to standard CPC campaigns apply to Sponsored Agents too.
OpenAI hasn't published a specific minimum spend for the Shopify app path. The managed service minimum has been $10,000. If the Shopify app access has a meaningfully lower floor, that changes the test economics for mid-market DTC brands.
Sponsored Agents also don't appear in every ChatGPT session. They surface when OpenAI's system identifies commercial intent. You don't control which queries trigger your agent. Audience targeting remains coarser than what you'd get from Meta or Google.
The bottom line
The Shopify integration makes ChatGPT ads materially easier to test. The Sponsored Agents format addresses the most legitimate criticism of the channel — the awkward jump from conversational AI to a static landing page.
Whether it performs depends on whether your brand can run a real sales conversation. That is a different skill than writing ad copy, and most brands haven't practiced it.
If you've been waiting for a lower barrier to entry, the Shopify app is it. Get the catalog connected, build conversion signal with a small CPC campaign, and draft your conversation brief before you turn on Sponsored Agents. The brands that figure out their agent conversation now have a real head start when Q4 drives SMB demand into the auction.
