OpenAI flipped a switch on ChatGPT Ads that changes its position in your channel mix: oCPC bidding is now live. You can build campaigns with a Conversions objective, and the system shifts delivery toward clicks statistically more likely to produce a purchase, signup, or other conversion event. This is not a tweak to how the platform feels — it's the feature that turns a click-buying tool into a performance channel.
Ads are now appearing in 51% of US ChatGPT replies. The audience isn't a niche placement anymore.
What oCPC Bidding Actually Does
With oCPC active, you pick a conversion event — a product purchase, a lead form submission, an add-to-cart — and set a bid cap. ChatGPT's delivery system then favors users more likely to take that action. Billing stays on a cost-per-click basis. You're not paying more per click; you're getting better-qualified clicks.
One thing you need to know before you start: existing CPM and CPC campaigns cannot be converted to oCPC. You must create new campaigns from scratch, select a supported conversion event, and set fresh bid caps. Plan for that setup time.
Everything That Shipped With the July 24 Batch
OpenAI packaged eight changes at once. oCPC got the headline, but the rest matter too.
Average daily budgets: Daily spend no longer locks to a fixed cap. Spend can run higher or lower on any given day while staying within a weekly target — the same model Meta and Google have used for years. If you've been managing ChatGPT campaigns with exact daily budget precision, your pacing assumptions just changed.
Automatic Advanced Matching: ChatGPT now uses additional user signals to tie conversions back to ad clicks. Attribution improves — but only if your Conversions API is live. Pixel-only tracking won't get you there.
AppsFlyer and Adjust integrations: Mobile attribution is now native to the platform. If your brand drives significant revenue through an app, ChatGPT campaigns are now measurable end-to-end without workarounds.
Geo exclusions: You can now exclude specific locations from delivery. This was a gap for any brand with restricted distribution — it's closed now.
Bulk API: Create and manage campaigns at scale through the API. For agencies or brands running more than a few campaigns at once, this was the operational blocker.
Multi-Product Carousels Just Went Live
As of August 5–7, multi-product carousel ads are available in ChatGPT. Product cards now show pricing and star ratings alongside the creative. If you're running product feed ads, this is the first format that actually behaves like the shopping ads you know from Google and Meta.
According to OpenAI, feed-based ads have been among the strongest-performing formats since the platform launched. The carousel extends that by putting multiple SKUs in view in a single placement — practical for any catalog-driven brand.
The Numbers That Tell You Whether to Actually Test This
CPMs for ecommerce and retail run $25–$60. CPC benchmarks land at $3–$5. Those rates are higher than Google Display or Meta's broad audiences, but the comparison is wrong. Users querying ChatGPT about which product to buy or comparing options are further into a decision than a cold-feed audience.
OpenAI reportedly hit $100 million in annualized ad revenue within the first six weeks of launch. That's not a platform in beta — brands are allocating real budgets here.
What to Do Before Your Next Budget Cycle
Set up your Conversions API first. oCPC bidding depends on clean conversion signal, and Automatic Advanced Matching can't do its job without it. This is the step that determines whether your attribution data is usable.
Then build a new campaign using the Conversions objective. Pick your highest-converting product or offer, connect your product feed for the carousel format, and set a CPC bid cap you can sustain for two to three weeks of data collection. Don't try to retrofit existing campaigns — they can't switch to oCPC.
If significant revenue runs through a mobile app, install the AppsFlyer or Adjust integration now. It's live and there's no reason to wait.
The first-mover advantage on any ad platform compounds fast. ChatGPT Ads stopped being an interesting experiment the moment conversion bidding went live.
