Amazon and OpenAI announced on September 10 that Amazon DSP advertisers can now extend their campaigns into ChatGPT ads through a managed service partnership. Delta Vacations is the first named brand in the pilot.
The announcement is real. The access right now is limited. Both of those things matter.
How the integration actually works
This is not a campaign type you turn on in a dashboard. Amazon DSP sells the inventory as a managed service — Amazon Ads reps handle campaign setup and management, while OpenAI controls the actual placement inside ChatGPT. Your ads appear in a conversational ad experience within ChatGPT. The platform's own systems determine where and when.
The feature Amazon is calling "context hints" lets Amazon match ads to relevant topics, conversations, and keywords inside ChatGPT. Advertisers don't directly configure those targeting parameters — the matching happens within Amazon's layer on top of OpenAI's placement logic.
Reporting covers the basics: impressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM, and CPC. Both buying models are available. Amazon is also enabling product feed integration, which auto-generates ad creative from your existing catalog. For e-commerce brands with large SKU sets, that last detail matters more than it sounds.
Why Amazon's data changes the ChatGPT Ads equation
ChatGPT's advantage in advertising has always been conversational context. A user asking "what's the best protein powder for muscle recovery" is telling you something very specific about purchase intent. That context is genuinely different from a keyword match or an audience segment.
What ChatGPT hasn't had is purchase history on hundreds of millions of Prime members.
Amazon brings a purchase intent graph that no other platform matches at consumer scale. When you layer that first-party shopping and streaming data onto ChatGPT's conversational context, you get something that hasn't existed before — an ad targeting signal built simultaneously on what someone is talking about and what they've actually bought.
For brands already running Amazon DSP campaigns, the technical lift is lower than starting a ChatGPT Ads account from scratch. Your existing audience segments, your product data, and potentially your measurement setup all carry through the managed service layer. This is an extension of what you're already doing, not a new platform to learn independently.
Non-endemic advertisers — brands that don't sell on Amazon but use Amazon DSP for audience reach — are also in scope here. If you've been using Amazon's data to run brand awareness campaigns off Amazon, this partnership adds another inventory source through the same buying relationship.
The constraint that changes the practical reality
Managed service means a gatekeeper. You're not logging in and launching. You need an Amazon Ads rep willing to add you to the pilot queue, and access is going to brands with existing DSP relationships and meaningful budget behind them.
Smaller DTC brands without an established Amazon DSP relationship don't have a path into this pilot today. That is the honest read of where this stands in September 2026. File it, track it, and revisit when the managed-to-self-serve transition happens — that timing is not public yet.
For everyone not in the pilot, the ChatGPT Ads self-serve path remains the faster on-ramp. The platform already has CPC and CPA bidding, geo-targeting, custom audiences, and third-party attribution integrations live. The Amazon DSP route adds a data layer on top of that infrastructure, but the core placement is available to you now through OpenAI directly.
What this partnership tells you about where ChatGPT Ads is going
ChatGPT Ads crossed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate earlier this month. OpenAI has spent the year building out the performance stack — conversion optimization, mobile attribution, product feed ads — turning an experimental placement into a mature performance channel.
The Amazon DSP partnership is a distribution bet. OpenAI gains access to Amazon's advertiser base, which runs deep into the mid-market. Amazon gains a new inventory source for its DSP without building the product itself. Both companies get a data advantage that the other couldn't replicate alone.
The consequence for the broader market: as Amazon's demand pipeline connects to ChatGPT's supply, pricing will reflect that pressure. The window for establishing your presence inside ChatGPT Ads at current CPMs is real, and the Amazon partnership shortens it.
What to do before the pilot widens
If you run Amazon DSP campaigns, email your rep about ChatGPT Ads pilot access today. There's no guarantee of a yes, but you need to be in the queue. When you do get access, product catalog quality determines what the auto-generated ad creative looks like. A thin feed will produce thin ads regardless of how good the targeting is.
If you're not an Amazon DSP customer, the priority is building your ChatGPT Ads baseline through the self-serve path first. Get your pixel placed, run CPC campaigns to generate performance data, and establish your tCPA before Amazon's demand hits the auction.
Understanding how new AI ad channels interact with your current account setup is the actual planning question here. The free audit at Gromerce gives you a starting point in a few minutes.
Amazon brought the data. OpenAI built the intent surface. The managed service layer is the only thing keeping this from being an immediate story for every e-commerce brand.
