Netflix Dropped Its Minimum Buy. Any Trade Desk Advertiser Can Now Reach 250 Million Viewers.

Netflix folded its ad inventory into The Trade Desk's Sellers and Publishers 500+ marketplace in July 2026, removing the private deal requirement that had kept the platform out of reach for most DTC advertisers. 250 million ad-supported viewers are now accessible with no minimum spend and no separate integration.

Netflix Dropped Its Minimum Buy. Any Trade Desk Advertiser Can Now Reach 250 Million Viewers.

What just changed

Netflix opened its ad inventory to every buyer on The Trade Desk. As of mid-July 2026, Netflix appeared in The Trade Desk's Sellers and Publishers 500+ marketplace — an always-on inventory pool that buyers reach through their existing campaigns, with no minimum spend and no change to their standard workflow.

That's the part worth pausing on. Before this, reaching Netflix programmatically meant either signing a programmatic guaranteed deal (which requires direct engagement and typically a significant spend commitment) or accessing a private marketplace arrangement that carried the same access barriers. For most DTC brands, neither path was realistic.

Now they are. If your team is already running on The Trade Desk, Netflix inventory is there. No new platform to onboard. No deal to negotiate. No floor.

The access wall that just came down

To understand why this matters, you have to understand what accessing Netflix inventory actually required before July.

Programmatic Guaranteed deals on premium streaming platforms typically carry five-figure monthly commitments at minimum. Private marketplace arrangements require direct outreach, deal ID setup, and vendor approval. Both options implied an advertiser at a certain scale — one with a dedicated programmatic trading team and a streaming-specific budget line.

Netflix launched its ad tier in late 2022 and has been building its programmatic infrastructure since. The platform reported more than 4,000 active advertisers in its Q1 2026 earnings — up 70% year over year. Programmatic buying was approaching 50% of non-live inventory per the same report. The Trade Desk integration removes the last gating mechanism: the requirement to hold a formal deal ID before buying.

What 250 million viewers means for a media buyer

Netflix's ad-supported tier has 250 million monthly active viewers globally, confirmed in Q1 2026 earnings. The number matters less than the context it represents.

Netflix viewers are in lean-back mode: not scrolling a feed, not running a search, not comparing products. They're in a high-attention state engaged with long-form content. The advertising context is closer to broadcast TV than social, but with programmatic targeting capabilities.

The viewing environment also shapes competitive pressure. Most DTC brands run on Meta, Google, and Amazon. Some test TikTok and CTV broadly. Fewer are running Netflix. When inventory opens to smaller buyers, the period before it crowds up is typically the period with the best efficiency. The Trade Desk integration just started that clock for Netflix.

What the setup actually requires

No minimum doesn't mean no investment. Standard programmatic workflows have their own cost realities:

  • CPM floors on premium streaming inventory are higher than open-exchange display
  • Netflix's environment requires strong video creative — the audience context and attention span differ from social
  • Attribution on lean-back CTV works differently from last-click. You'll want a CTV measurement partner or a view-through attribution window sized to your actual conversion cycle

The 4,000-advertiser figure from Q1 is small compared to the many millions running on Meta. That gap is where the opportunity lives. The inventory is real, the minimum is gone, and most of your direct competitors aren't there yet.

Who this changes the math for

The brands with the most direct reason to look at this now are those selling higher-AOV considered purchases: categories where the buyer does research across multiple sessions before converting. Netflix's lean-back context suits that consideration cycle in a way that a 15-second scroll on Instagram does not.

Brands in categories like home, fitness, personal care, and mid-market fashion already run CTV budgets. For them, adding Netflix through an existing Trade Desk seat is the lowest-friction expansion possible.

Brands running entirely on Meta and Google may have a more fundamental decision: whether CTV belongs in the channel mix at all before testing a specific platform. The Trade Desk integration lowers the barrier but doesn't resolve the creative or measurement readiness questions.

What to do with it

If you're already on The Trade Desk: check that Netflix is available in your SP500+ inventory selections. Run a prospecting campaign against your relevant audience segments with a strict frequency cap. CTV overdelivery on a narrow audience burns budget and wears out viewers fast.

If you're not on The Trade Desk: this isn't a reason to join a DSP by itself. But if you've been weighing programmatic access and streaming matters to your brand, the equation just changed.

Netflix viewers tend to index higher on household income and purchase intent compared to open-web audiences, as Netflix has noted in its advertiser materials. Whether that translates for your specific product depends on your category, your creative quality, and how your attribution setup handles view-through conversions.

The bigger risk isn't moving too fast here. It's missing the window before CPMs on Netflix inventory start reflecting real demand.
