OpenAI sent a product update email to ChatGPT Ads advertisers in early August with a quiet deadline inside it: Automatic Advanced Matching (AAM) turns on by default for all existing Web pixels on August 17. That is Monday.
If you missed the email, you are not alone. The change does not require you to take any action. It activates whether you review it or not.
What AAM actually does
Automatic Advanced Matching reads information your site visitors type into website forms — email address, phone number, name — hashes it in the browser before it leaves the device, and sends it alongside your standard conversion events.
OpenAI uses that hashed data to match more conversions back to ad interactions. Attribution gets more accurate, the bidding system gets stronger signal, and the gap between conversions you observe and conversions OpenAI counts narrows. If you have been running ChatGPT Ads and finding attribution underwhelming, AAM is what starts to fix that.
The feature has been on by default for every new Web pixel created since the July 24 batch of updates. What changes August 17 is that existing pixels — ones created before AAM launched — get the feature switched on automatically unless you intervene.
Why this is different from the oCPC launch
If you read coverage of the July ChatGPT Ads update, you likely saw AAM mentioned as one of eight changes that shipped at once. Most of the attention went to oCPC conversion bidding, which is the more dramatic feature. AAM was framed as an attribution improvement, which is accurate.
What was less clear in that coverage: AAM's auto-enable for existing pixels is a separate event happening now. You may have read that AAM exists and done nothing, which is a reasonable response to a feature launch. But August 17 is the moment existing pixels get pulled in.

The two questions worth answering before Monday
Should you keep AAM on? For most performance advertisers running ChatGPT Ads with a conversions goal, yes. Better match rate means better signal for oCPC campaigns. The hashing happens client-side — OpenAI does not receive raw customer data, only hashed identifiers. The argument for keeping it on is simple: you are already trying to measure conversions, and AAM makes that measurement more accurate.
Does your legal or privacy setup create complications? This is where it gets more nuanced. If you are advertising in the EU or UK, your pixels may have been set up under specific consent frameworks or data processing agreements. AAM enabling automatically changes what is collected without you deliberately choosing to change it. Whether that creates a compliance issue depends on your DPA and your existing pixel consent disclosures.
US-based advertisers with standard e-commerce setups are in simpler territory. The hashing model is privacy-aligned in the same way Meta's Conversions API and Google's Enhanced Conversions are. If those are running without issue, AAM on ChatGPT Ads is unlikely to require anything different.
What to do
In ChatGPT Ads Manager, AAM is controlled at the pixel level in Data Source settings. There is a per-pixel toggle and an account-level setting. If you want to opt out for all pixels, the account-level setting handles it. If you want to keep it for most pixels but exclude specific ones, you can manage that per-pixel.
If you decide to keep AAM — which is the right call for most advertisers running ChatGPT Ads in a standard performance setup — there is nothing to do. It activates Monday automatically.
If you want to opt out, do it this week.
The pattern here matters
This is the third major ad platform to auto-enable first-party data matching in the last two years. Meta did it with Conversions API. Google did it with Enhanced Conversions. ChatGPT Ads is doing the same thing. The direction across all platforms is identical: more aggressive default data collection, opt-out instead of opt-in, and attribution that degrades if you do not participate.
The move makes sense from a platform perspective. Better signal produces better results, which keeps advertisers spending. But each rollout requires advertisers to make an active decision rather than drift into a default they did not review. Monday is that moment for ChatGPT Ads existing pixels.
You will not notice the change in your dashboard either way. The question is whether you chose it.
